PAUL THOMPSON
ASSOCIATES
Consultants in Wireless Communication
- Provided
consulting services to Earthlink, Inc. to assist them in
evaluating wireless Internet Service alternatives. Specific activities
included: assessment of the technical merits of various fixed and
mobile
wireless approaches, engaging in executive-level discussions about the
implications of each approach to the Earthlink Internet services
Business
Plans, the technical evaluation of candidate vendors for these services
and
the evaluation of vendor testing of wireless products.
- Participation as a
voting member of
the
IEEE 802.22 Working Group that is establishing an international
Standard for a broadband, fixed wireless
access
(FWA) system operating in the television bands. When completed, this
Standard will employ cognitative receiver techniques to define a point-to-multipoint FWA
system capable of operating on a non-interfering basis to incumbent TV
broadcasters.
- Provided
consultation on fixed
wireless access to the investment community as a part of the Councils
of
Advisors of the Gerson Lehrman Group. In that capacity, consultation
was
provided on the state-of-the-art of fixed wireless equipment, the
viability
of the industry's vendors and the nature of fixed wireless
applications,
all of which was relied upon by the clients to make investment
decisions.
- Provided
consulting
services
to the Engineering Services Directorate of Telcordia Technologies
(formerly
Bellcore) in their pursuit and execution of technical services
contracts
with the fixed wireless access and satellite communications
communities. Services provided included
assistance
in positioning Telcordia products and services in the marketplace plus
consultation with Telcordia
customers
on diverse topics ranging from spectrum auction strategy to detailed
technical
performance issues.
- Participation in
the
IEEE 802.16
Standards Committee which established the Interoperability and
Coexistence
Standards for broadband, 11-60 GHz point-to-multipoint fixed wireless
access
systems. Paul Thompson's IEEE 802.16 activities, jointly sponsored by
Telcordia
(formerly Bellcore) and Ensemble Communications, Inc., included
technical
background contributions as well as the crafting of portions of the
Standards
document.
- Provided
Engineering
Services to implement a GPS-based vehicle tracking system for a fleet
of 600
taxis. The system employed a private radio network deployed over a 200
square-mile area to relay real-time location and charge meter
information from
each taxi to a central dispatching and map display Center. At the
Center, the
location and charge meter information was intended to optimize taxi
dispatching, perform financial analyses of taxi operations and provide
assistance to the taxi drivers in case of emergency.
- Performed a
year-long Study for the Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation
District of alternatives for providing wireless Internet access for the
commuters riding the Ferries on San Francisco Bay. The Study included a
market survey of commuter communications needs, technical evaluations
of various Local Area and Wide Area solutions, conduct of
demonstrations with multiple wireless Service Providers and a Report to
Transportation District executives describing their options for
providing service.
- Provided
consulting services for the preparation of Requests for Information
(RFIs) on behalf of the WCS Forum, a consortium of WCS Band license
holders. The RFIs solicited information from equipment vendors
appropriate to wireless local loop, point-to-point and
point-to-multipoint applications. In subsequent activity, Paul Thompson
Associates evaluated the point-to-multipoint RFI responses on behalf of
one of the WCS license holders. That evaluation included drawing
conclusions about the technical soundness of the responder's submission
and the applicability of the submission to the license holder's
business plan.
- Completed an RF
design study for Ensemble Communications, Inc. a manufacturer of time
division duplex LMDS point-to-multipoint radio equipment. This five
month study determined candidate hub locations, frequency reuse plans
and potential user counts for three urban and industrial cities in
support of a larger capital investment study. To provide the needed
information, Paul Thompson Associates developed post processing
software for Telcordia's (formerly Bellcore) WinPlan RF Design tool to
enable it to output volumetric user densities.
- Provided
technical consulting services for the point-to-multipoint broadband
fixed wireless access product development effort at Proxim Corporation.
This activity includes participation in the product definition plus the
conduct of a testing program to validate system performance both in the
laboratory and in outdoor applications.
- Provided product
definition and technical marketing services to Ubiquity Communication,
Inc., a start-up developer of point-to-multipoint broadband multimedia
MAN/WAN radio systems. Applications span from the WCS (2.3 GHz) to the
U-NII (5 GHz) Bands. Activities focus on relating the technical
attributes of the design to marketplace benefits and the subsequent
identification of the most promising candidate customers for the
product.
- Provided
engineering services to ConvergeLabs, the developer of GPRS-like data
applications for 2.5G GSM mobile wireless networks. Specific activities
included technical analysis of new products, reviewing the product
development schedules and tasks, advising on product positioning and
assisting senior management on general matters related to the evolution
of the company.
- Completed a
Scalability Study
for Network System Technolgies' (NST) high speed two-way wireless
Internet offering. This study validated the number of users which can
be supported using NST's MMDS/ITFS & UHF Bands forward and 2.4 GHz
ISM
Band return link architecture, operating in a variety of system
configurations.
- Completed a
High-speed Radio Study for Wireless Facilities Inc. of the commercial
opportunities for a 45 Mbps unlicensed band radio. The study involved
determining the technical attributes of the radio which influence its
commercial viability, interviewing industry sources and prospective
customers, and providing recommendations of the most promising
marketplace candidates for the product as well as a plan for validating
those recommendations.
